Cookie Solution – Shopify Integration Guide

Once you’ve inserted the link to your privacy policy (which of course also includes your cookie policy if you’ve activated it), you must complete the adaptation by also integrating the iubenda Cookie Solution to manage the banner visuals, the registering of consent and the preemptive blocking of cookies.

The Cookie Solution requires that you link to a cookie policy from you banner as legally required. If you have the cookie policy feature activated on your iubenda account (as explained here), the Cookie Solution automatically integrates your cookie policy into the solution once the option is selected. Otherwise, if you already have your own compliant cookie policy, you can simply insert your own link there. Either way, please remember that a cookie policy is required.

Except for the categories of exempt cookies, Cookie Law includes not only the obligation to set up and show the user a cookie policy, but also to display a brief notice (banner) at the user’s first visit to the site and to block scripts which install (or could install) cookies, until the user has granted consent. We suggest that you take a look at this article for further details on complying with the Cookie Law.

The source code of your Shopify theme also needs to be modified in a similar manner as in the Configuring iubenda for Shopify tutorial, in order to include the Cookie Solution into your website. All the steps remain the same, except this time, we’re going to place the code in the header instead of the footer.

Access your Shopify store’s admin panel and go to “Online Store > Themes”. Once there, click on “Actions” on the right, then “Edit Code” as pictured:

Shopify + iubenda: Customize Theme

If you’re using a sectioned theme, look under “Sections” and click on “Header.liquid”. If you’re using an older non-sectioned theme, just click on “theme.liquid” in the Templates directory. At this point, all that needs to be done is to locate the header section and insert the Cookie Solution script provided by iubenda before the </header> (in the older non-sectioned themes it’s called </head>):

Shopify + iubenda: Customize Add iubenda Cookie Solution to header

This will cause the iubenda cookie banner to appear on the page at each user’s first visit. User consent will be registered via the latter’s continued browsing activity and then memorized so that the Cookie Solution will not be reactivated on the same user’s next visit.

Cookie banner - Shopify integration

All the options to customize the visuals as well as the behaviour of the cookie banner are in this guide.

Also remember to set up the blocking of cookies that require user consent by using one of the following methods.
